I read this book almost ten years ago and thought, if a book like this exists, I can be a writer, too! Two years later, my first novel was published. I've read it countless times since then - it is my inspiration.
** spoiler alert ** I don't sling around 5 stars. But I loved this book. I loved the humour, the snarky comments, the bumper stickers that started the chapters. But I really loved the darkness. The desolation that Charley felt at times, the feeling that she just couldn't get things right. This book didn't shy away from the darkness. It wasn't all sweetness and light. Charley knows that she doesn't always get things right, and when things go wrong people tend to die. This book had balance Charley Davidson is a PI and the Grim Reaper. To the deceased she looks like the sun shining on a swimming pool - she is the light that they should go to - sometimes she has to convince them, but they are drawn to her. She remembers everything from the day she was born, she can understand any language and she can see the dead. And she's alone. She's had to endure a lifetime of people not believing her, of being humiliated as a small child. But someone's always had her back. Someone always protects her - by severing the spinal cords of anyone who threatens her. And she's having sleep sex with a god of perfection. I loved the fact that she felt secure enough to tell her best friend what she was and to have that friend believe her was beautiful. I loved the fact that she named her breasticles and ovaries. I loved the one liners. I loved Reyes. But I'm afraid of him. Would he kill Charley if he had to? How did he wake up from a gunshot to the frontal lobe that should have left him a vegetable. What will happen if Satan ever gets a hold of Charley. I don't know, but I'm excited to find out.
