I finished this book this morning and I liked it... it's just that it was too predictable. I finished it because I was hoping that maybe I was wrong, maybe there was some exciting twist in there but unfortunately the only twist you get is given away in the first chapter, that Cheyenne is blind. I figured out how the rest would end and I was right. It's not a boring book, just typical I guess.

Beautiful YA book about how we treat girls in our culture. Never preachy, always real and heartbreaking. Sara Zarr is a fantastic new YA author.

As i read books aloud before bed, sometimes i get tired of reading them--not so with this one. I very much liked Emma-Jean Lazarus, from the Harriet the Spy school of pre-adolescent-autistic-girl-school of main characters with the main difference being that Emma-Jean, while not being quite sure what is happening in the minds of her classmates, doesn't bear them any of the ill will that Harriet did--with the result that they don't (for the most part) bother with Emma-Jean, mostly regarding her with tolerant bemusement. Interesting too, the bluntness with which the sheer inconceivable thought processes of pre/adolescents are presented. The adults in E-J's life are well-drawn as well, with their concern for her well-being tempered by their willingness to let her do her own thing with little interest in changing her, rather letting her figure out her own shit and trusting her to get where she needs to go. Satisfying to read about a 12-year old that people want and trust to succeed.
