This book is painful and disgusting, but it definitely gets your attention. It focuses on the really horrible and grotesque, but in such a way, you just kind of have to respect him for conjuring such a deranged world-view. His book "Choke" was actually tamer by comparison. It is disturbing to realize how compelling and real it all feels. Raw, visceral fiction.
I chose to read Lolita as a way of enhancing "Reading Lolita in Tehran". As a psychotherapist who sees abused girls, I had difficulty witht the sympathetic portrayal of the perpetrator. Publication of this novel would have met a very different enviromnet today.
