This book is nothing short of amazing, and brave, in my humble opinion, as it tackles a religious subject that is still a point of contention to this day--Muslim perceptions of the Arabic language, its alphabet and its religion. Honestly, as a student of Islam and Middle Eastern cultures, I found these linguistics aspects more interesting than the fictional storylines of the book, though they were pretty good, too. This novel is also quite complex, and at least a basic knowledge of Arab language, culture and thought is really beneficial before beginning it. Those assets are not mandatory, however, to appreciating the depth and lyrical quality of Schami's writing.
