This one was OK. I haven't read it since high school, but I'm sure it holds up better than anything else she wrote.
I'm a little torn on the rating on this one, actually. I have neither seen the movie adaptation or read Pride and Prejudice, so while I sort of knew the book was about a single, weight-obsessed, thirty-something I wasn't entirely sure what to expect going in. And it was damn funny. I found myself laughing out loud many times during the book, always a good sign in a book you've chose to accompany you poolside. I liked the story, I thought Bridget was funny, neurotic, and likeable, and the plot moved along nicely. I did not like the diary format. Or, to be more specific, I didn't like the way this particular "diary" was written. "In future must get right up when wake up and reform entire laundry system." What do you have against "I," Helen Fielding? Grrr. And I actually think I would have been less bothered by it if she had at least been consistent, always omitting the personal pronoun. But no. On most days we see a well-written, more formal form of storytelling and then we get a few of those sentences thrown in each day for good measure. V. annoying. Which, since I'm already complaining, was also irritating. How much harder is it to write "very?" I know of no one who writes their diaries and journals in such a way. But overall I truly enjoyed the story and I'm glad this is the one I picked for my mini-vacation. Easy enough to get into and not hard to put down to do more pressing things, like gamble or hit the pool bar.
This book is enjoyable enough, but entirely predictable.
Slightly better than The Fountainhead, if only because it's a lot shorter.
started it and never finished...oddly.
Well written? Yes. Good story line? Yes. Creative? Yes. Worth reading? No. The problem I have with this book (and many of the Stephen King books I've attempted to read) is that everything in it is presented as being mean, petty, twisted, angry, cruel, etc. When I read, I'm willing to wade through sad, oppresive, heart-wrenching difficulties with the main characters if necessary, but ultimately, I read fiction in the hopes that it is going to help me feel good about life, forget my troubles, forget how awful we can be to each other. This book takes all the worst of humanity and shoves it bluntly in your face. Finally, I just couldn't stand the thought of picking the book up to be brutalized by Stephen King's and Peter Staub's writing again. So I didn't. I'm so glad this was a library book, rather than a purchase.
