Every page is full of adventure and action. I could not put this book down. As soon as I finished, I wanted to wrap myself back in the pages and never emerge. Blood Red Road is an amazing and promising debut from Moira Young. I recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in YA dystopians.
** spoiler alert ** Michael Chabon certainly has a tremendous vocabulary and an amazing ability to describe a scene. But what kept me from giving this five stars was that Chabon's excessive detail sometimes bogged down the narrative. I also felt like even though we had 600+ pages, we never got to understand how Joe and Sam *felt* and therefore never truly got to know them. We saw it some with Joe's father's and brother's deaths, but I wanted to truly feel what he was feeling throughout his tragic story. The excruciating information of the deaths of the remainder of his family is glossed over and mentioned as an afterthought. And Sam seemed so unfeeling as he discovered his sexuality. I wish I could have understood both his and Joe's feelings better, it would have made them more relatable to me. Maybe that was the point and they weren't supposed to be relatable. I guess I missed the point then.
