Reading this book is so deliciously sad, and I think part of the reason it was so wildly popular is the comfort factor. People like to believe that their dead loved ones are still somewhere, able to think and enjoy, able to miss them back, just like Susie Salmon looking down on her family. And yes, it gets a little freaky with the Ray Singh/Ruth Connors/Susie love situation...but I think it Ruth had wanted something like that to happen all along. Somehow her purpose was to be highly sensitive to dead women and girls. Freaky yes, but the story would have been boring without that part.
