I finally finished it after starting it years ago! It was a great read...amazing detail...and a solid ending.
‘Love is suicide’ (‘Bodies’, Smashing Pumpkins) Don’t start this book. Don’t start it if you have not too much time on your hands. Otherwise, you’ll be drawn into this ocean of short waves that hit you one by one and you’ll be sitting long hours, with your dinner uncooked and your work undone (‘Just one more chapter’, you foolishly promise to yourself at 1.30 a.m.), devouring the greedy dynamics of images. The film-like quality of the book won’t let your imagination rest. The conflicting emotions, the war between sense and sensibility, the opposites that can’t stand each other but can’t live alone: it’s impossible to ennumerate the number of ideas that appear in this book. Nor is it possible to say how many ideas enter the reader’s mind while reading it. And one day after the book’s finished. And one week later. And next time you’re in Zakopane. Or in the Alps. Or when it rains… This incredible novel describes, or rather paints, the friendship between the anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski and the artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. But don’t start it now. I can see you’re quite busy.
