I wanted to rank this book higher but a shift in tone/story/plot midway through has me hesitant. What started out as a stark, scary, emotional story hit a wall and turned into a different book. I'm still a bit puzzled as to why the author chose to approach the change to the story in this manner.
I love when an author populates his/her book only with flawed characters. I found this book to be a slow read because each turn of the page brought me closer to what obviously would be an unhappy ending. But when the tragedy finally arrived, it felt so inevitable and "right" that it was almost a relief.
Use this book when discussing with young children the best places to read-to-self.
