Let me preface this by saying I really like Neil Gaiman's work. But for some reason, American; Gods didn't seem up to snuff. There wasn't much to the storyline except for the main character Shadow doing his rambling, random cross country tour on behalf of Mr. Wednesday. It was interesting to see mythological figures plunked into various mundane American landscapes, and it was more interesting to look up the mythological figures Mr. Gaiman uses and references in his novel, but the characters themselves were not interesting at all. You spend nearly 600 pages with Shadow, and (for me, at least), it felt like I knew no more about him than I learned in the first chapter. Add to this a lack of action, very little romance, and only a tiny bit of mystery, and you end up with the question of "Why did I read this?" It turns out the reason I read it was Neil Gaiman is one helluva literary stylist. I read it more for the journey, experiencing it for the original concepts and for the telling of the tale itself. I may have not liked the book overall, but at least there were some cool sights along the way. Oddly, the thing I enjoyed most was the postscript, which was set in Reykjavik, Iceland, on the fourth of July because it reminded me of the Fourth of July I got to spend there. Ah, memories.
