aha!!! I finished this book also in time for the Spring Challenge. This was the first Ben Elton book I read, and was happy to re-read it again. I like the interaction between the characters of different motives, but was particularly impressed by the explanation of the motives of the chief 'villain' and it was a pithy observation of the balanced state of fear and apathy, of self-interest and powerlessness regarding the Environment.
Verbose and boring, I could not get into this book at all. I do NOT recommend it. Pity, as it has gotten some rave reviews.
