The story begins in a nursing home, Jacob Jankowski is seventy years old and feels younger than his age. The circus has come and set up across from the nursing home and brings back memories of his earlier years....the time is during the great depression and Jacob Jankowski is studying at Cornell to become a vet. During the end of his last year at school he is taken out to receive news that his parents have died in a car accident and have left him nothing. He is so overcome with sorrow that he cannot finish his final exam in order to get his degree. He drops out of school and hops on a train, not knowing that it is a circus train. He joins the circus as there vet and falls madly in love with Marlena, the wife of the animal trainer, August. August is very cordial and kind, then suddenly becomes violent. He beats the animals and even beats the employees of the circus. He is a paranoid schizophrenic. Jacob stays with the circus even during trying times, he is accused of scandalous activities and betrayal. The circus purchases an elephant, Rosie, whom seems dim witted and stupid....she just doesn't understand English, she understand Polish. Once Jacob understands that Rosie takes commands in Polish, the beatings stop. August then suspects Jacob of having an affair with his wife, he then beats his wife. She leaves August, members of the circus go missing or redlighted, and Jacob saves Marlena. In the end there is a stampede by the circus animals, August is killed and the circus is disband by the city marshals. Jacob and Marlene get married and have a family, work for Ringley's and have a wonderful life together.
