I found this book at first read, shocking - the amount of casual sex, drugs and drink going on shocked me - but as I continued I understood it was the intensity of the sex, drugs and drink that kept the pages turning fast. Miles/Pudge, i think is a brilliant character, starting off his time at school who kinda thinks "reading is sexy" - and this made me like him instantly. Alaska, one of my favourite characters of all time, fearless - "You smoke for pleasure, I smoke to die." She is reckless,a dn everything I am not, I cannot relate to her, but she made me feel as if I was letting my hair down. Just as Pudge says, "If people were rain, I was drizzle, and she was a hurricane." I found the last three pages moved me to tears, I found myself in my room, reading it aloud to myself again and again, sobbing. The writing was probally the most inspiring i've ever read. Green made me believe that what he said is true, "we are as indestructable as we believe ourselves to be." I am not a religious person but he made me for a moment think about the after life, "maybe the after life is something we pretend about, to ease the sorrow of loss." and "I don't know where there is, but I know it's beautiful." - and somehow, before I die, i think i'll remember, and i'll think - 'It better be.'
