The first half of this book kind made me want to jump off the nearest bridge - not really an uplifting kind of story. But the second half is the "redemption" section and is a good example of people dealing with what life hands them and moving on. If you like books told by different characters (each chapter is narrated by one of the main characters), then this might be worth trying. Otherwise, skip it.
A quick read. A read to steel yourself for. Simple language here does what dark humor does for Catch-22. War is hell, and only the young fight.
Strange at first, difficult to read, possibly because of the vocabulary and sentence structure, as one of the reviews states, it has to be read twice. A must for any English major. Tremendous emotional sensitivity of relationships on one hand and blunt reality of life on the other. The description of the post WWII world was fascinating; even though the title indicates the subject - the whole catastrophe of the second WW is on the periphery of the story. It reminds me of Helprin's style, specifically of "Soldier of the Great War".
