I love the way Riordan ends his books! It doesn't quite feel like a cliffhanger but totally leaves you anticipating what will happen next! The way he's woven all of the history of the family relationships and older myths is amazing. I loved every minute of this book!

Written by William Nicholson, the story weaves together the lives and inner thoughts of several characters in the countryside of Sussex, England. The setting is significant as the changing nature (or decline) of the English countryside is a concurrent theme. I enjoy books about marriage as well as the big questions of life. This book marries both. It's a slow read but I kept with it because the characters are believable and interesting: there's Laura, who is forced to evaluate her marriage when an old boyfriend lets her know he will be visiting - the story follows her thoughts up to the impending visits in flashbacks of what their relationship would have been, there's the teacher who is secretly a writer who's works have been rejected by publishers, a single mother who still has meaningless sex with the father of her daughter, an old woman and her dog, even Laura's husbands' secret desires. I felt challenged by this book; it's seemingly a light book but deftly captures the quiet desperation of ordinary lives.
