Sharp and wickedly funny. You know how lots of writers these days are praised for being kind/gentle with their characters, never making fun of them, never taking potshots? As laudable as I think those ideals are, I also love Muriel Spark for doing the opposite. She's not kind or gentle with *anybody* in this book.
