a delightful memoir. the author reminds me a bit of an urban and urbane Erma Bombeck. not all sweetness and light though... she gets down and dirty. this book is not about being a Mennonite. it's about being a woman who happens to be a Mennonite. I would recommend it.

I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars on this book, and I decided that the part of me that wanted to give it a 3 was my adult side. If I had read this book as a kid I would have been completely enchanted by it. The grown up in me, though, was annoyed by the author addressing the reader in almost every chapter. "What do you suppose, dear reader..." "Reader, to find the answer to that question you'll have to read on." Yadda, yadda, yadda. However, the story was great. My favorite quote (which, ironically, addresses the reader): "Reader, you must know that an interesting fate (sometimes involving rats, sometimes not) awaits almost everyone, mouse or man, who does not conform."
