I very much enjoyed this book. I found it to be a little different. I almost always like the police/magic mashups and this one was very different. First of all, the protagonist is not your usual cop. He is less of a tough guy, (though he will mix it up if need be), and has the feel of an investigator. I like the Sherlockian feel that comes from an apprentice and master working on a case. It also provides a convenient vehicle to explain things to the reader. Second, it amuses me to no end to read about London cops. As an American, and specifically one from Richmond VA, I have a hard time with the concept of a police force without guns. Hell, I don't think I know anyone that doesn't regurlarly carry a gun. Of course the protagonist does have magic...so I'd say it evens out a bit. I did enjoy this book and liked it enough to immediately purchae and start reading its sequel. Nuff said.
