Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in an essay that science fiction/fantasy is the best literary style to truly capture human nature because you can make the invisible tangible, thus providing a writer with a whole new means of exploring us, our societies, our shortcomings, etc. While the vast majority of the genre is, let's face it, trash (though often very fun to read trash, and well a lot of general fiction is also pretty awful as well), this book exemplifies that sentiment. A true gem for the thinking science fiction fanatic.
Kind of made me think of The Handmaid's Tale, although this is for a much younger audience. It was very attention getting, but the focus on sex was really over the top, and a bit uncomfortable. I mean, this is not a book you want to be reading on an airplane, where the person in the seat next to you can glance over. Every single page references sex. (Awkward!) Frankly, though, the overexposure to sex is not too far off from today's society and what is considered acceptable for American teens. (Yikes!) The premise is interesting, but I am disappointed that this is not a stand alone story. Sequels are killing me!
