If you're interested in travel, culture clashes, and the lives of everyday women, then this is a great book for you. It'll definitely resonate more if you've actually spent some time living as an expat, but overall it's a poignant as well as entertaining book.
Obviously the real test of this guide will come when I actually get to Ecuador, but it seems to maintain the typically excellent standard of the Rough Guide series. Anyone planning a trip should also note that Volcan Tungurahua has erupted violently since the publication of this edition (stated as Jan 2007, although the eruption began Sept 2006), affecting travel in the surrounding area (but apparently not Banos).
Last June was my most recent re-read, and I fall in love with it every time. I own the original translation and the 60th anniversary edition, both in paperback. Everyone should own this.
