This book is a mix of truly charming and hilarious essays of a man traveling with his wife and daughters and some essays that are a little underwhelming.
The thing is, I didn't find a lot of this funny... I found it kind of terrifying - WHY didn't someone - anyone really - stop this? I was saddened by this kid's life and how seamlessly he made the transition from quirky outsider with a little bit of OCD to living inside CRAZYTOWN. The characters, even Augusten himself, didn't seem real to me; they seemed like those people who try to shake things up by being different, for the mere sake of being different. And for someone who lived through it, Burroughs' observations often felt very removed. This was the first of his books I've read. And I'm currently reading "Magical Thinking," so maybe my mind will be changed. So far, though, not all that impressed with him.
Brilliant, cruel satire.
Beautifully written book by first time author, based on her mother's life. Each chapter introduced by excert from 'How to be an American Housewife', a book for Japanese war brides. Voice of both Shoko and Sue ring true.
