This was a a sequel that I actually enjoyed. I liked following the characters as they had grown over the years,moved to a new location and new friends. I liked the character of Taylor Greer when I first encountered her in "The Bean Trees." She is a strong resourceful woman who does not need for much. I thought that her adoption of Turtle was noble but the book seemed to want to make me think otherwise. I think there are times when what matters to the individual and the opportunities presented to them are more important than the philosophy of what is "right" for a people. Although I understand about wanting to preserve a heritage or a culture, I also think that tearing apart a mother and child when a bond has already been established would be traumatizing. This book presented several perspectives about adopting illegally or outside your race and made the story very personal.
