Scared me into ever getting into a relationship at the beginning of high school. It attempts to instill a perfectability that can never be achieved, producing messed-up 20-somethings who don't know how to handle their sexuality. However, if you live in the middle of a cornfield where you have to go into town to see the opposite sex, then this is the book for you! The goal put forth in this book is completely obtainable for you.

i was profoundly disappointed by this book. I expect a lot more from garrison keillor. it was like a midlife crisis on paper, which is perhaps what he intended, but it wasn't very effective. the only saving grace was his merciless skewering of the new yorker, one of my favourite magazines, and something that can stand up to the roasting he gave it. I can't tell if his clever insults stemmed from affection, as it is with me, or loathing. either way, this book didn't move me enough to care.

Maybe it was just the mood I was in, but this book was simply delightful. I've put it on my read again shelves because I'm hoping if I go back and read it again, it will still be just as much fun as the first time around. I wanted to cry in the first couple chapters and then laughed the rest of the way through the book. I've always wanted to live in the south and experience Southern grace and charm and living, which could perhaps explain why I enjoyed it so much. I thought Hoffman did a wonderful job of developing CeeCee and Oletta's relationship, as well as writing the other women who held CeeCee together. I was reading it in the kitchen part of my classroom while my student teacher was in the other room and she asked me in between classes what I was giggling about. I had to tell her it was this book! It nothing life changing and its not going to win any awards, it was simply simple. And I liked that.

This is a great and very thrilling adventure story and an interesting historical novel. A classical well written piece that I could not lay down until I finished it all.
