this has a lot more action and excitement than the first one, and she's able to spend a lot less time establishing the world. these are by no means amazing, but cassie clare writes the hell out of some of my favorite tropes. ===== this book grabbed a lot more than the first one. love love love this world.
Not like Tolkien at all. The Thomas Covenant series sucked me into its creative black hole for weeks on end! I was hooked, gone, my friends lost sight of me. Awesome imagination. The characters are flawed and vivid. This is powerful stuff.
The title is a bit of a misnomer...it IS about trying to lessen the influence of the media, but more importantly, she talks a lot of how to raise a great kid and the developmental approaches that work (with lots of examples). A big part of that approach is limiting media influences, but it also talks about how to deal with the world as it is. I highly recommend this book. Even Joey is reading it.
Words like "snozzcumber" are frequent through out the book and may be a too confusing for younger readers. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend to others.
The perfect book at the perfect time. Like Buddy Glass, I was a lost 22 year-old, awkward in social situations and prone to drinking too much to compensate for it, when I first read this book. I read it every year, and it always brings me back to that first read, with the painful memories associated with it softened by time.
