A great exploration of the place of war in human history and behaviour. Hedges was a war correspondent in the Balkans and Central America, and shares much of his first-hand experiences here as a way of demonstrating his main point -- that despite the horror of war, it can also be exhilarating and intoxicating to its participants. Lots of food for thought for those who locate the causes of war in human nature. A bit rambling at the end -- it's clear this is a cathartic work for the author -- but don't let it put you off, it's a fascinating read.
i learned a lot from this book. But primarily things like, "it's ok to fail". And that "everyone has their own path". It was also pretty enlightening that there are so many difficult things in the world. This man, who was so brilliant, found things difficult -- that is amazing to me. in any case, read the book if you want some good stories. Read the book if you need some creative inspiration. but always, enjoy this book.
