Started listening to the audio version & it was interesting enough, till it described a brutal rape, not even all the way through the 1st CD (not that it would've been okay anywhere in the book; just noting that it got objectionable before I even got through the 1st CD). I really don't want those images in my head, so I refused to read any further. Rereading - the paperback version makes it easier to skip over/skim the brutal scene - because this book was chosen for our book group. UPDATE: Tip #1, skip the bottom half of page 14 & the top half of page 15 to avoid the rape scene. If you don't want to read about Indian attacks & other violence from that era, this may not be the book for you, as it would be more work than I am willing to do to tell what pages to avoid for that. Most of it was handled without being graphic. That said, the main character continued to grow on me, and the story developed into far more than I expected from a girl's diary entries. While it seems like every single thing that could ever happen to anyone in the Arizona Territory from 1881 - 1901 happenned to one family (which seems like a bit much if you think about it), it does help give a picture of what life was like during that era. I especially enjoyed recognizing the towns, landmarks & areas mentioned in the book, since I don't live far from where much of it took place.
