I really like this type of story. An American destroyer, fighting the Japanese in the second world war, finds itself entering a terrific storm. This storm does some very unusual things and when the storm abates, the USS Walker finds itself in a world, although physically very similar (same seas, land and islands)' it becomes quickly and painfully obvious that they are in a very different but parallel Earth. The story of how the crew cope with this and bring their ww2 weaponry and technology to this different earth and races, is very well told and thoroughly engrossing. The author, Taylor Anderson has a thorough knowledge of naval warfare and Destroyer class of ship in particular. The principle characters are well drawn and you find yourself really rooting for them as the engrossing story unfolds. This is the first in a series which follows the fortunes of the 'Destroyermen' and women And I find myself thoroughly enjoying them.

This is a pretty poor translation; obviously, I'm not sympathetic to translating verse into prose.

I think I expected a little more in the way of laughs and well, snark. Some of the eassys were good but for the most part it was just okay.

While not the best book that I have ever read, it was also not the worst. I really enjoyed Titan, I thought that was a great book from start to finish. The second book, Wizard, was slow at first but built to a great and fast-paced finish. As the third book, and how Wizard ended, I was really looking forward to this one. However, I just didn't really like this one. I didn't care for the characters, the plot was boring, and I thought the ending was ridiculous. I also felt that the book was written for the sole purpose of finishing the trilogy. It just felt like it was written just because Mr. Varley had started it, and now we have come this far, it might as well end. Like I said it wasn't the worst book I've read, but I was disappointed in it.
