this book was so sad but i liked it anyways
~ SPOILERS ~ I wish Violet would have more of a backbone as the book progressed. Alas, she came across as a puppet on her childish, selfish, pouty, dreadful, willful, deceitful, manipulative & domineering – Did I leave out any adjectives here ? LOL… - twin sister’s string all the way ‘till the end. There were only 2 occasions where she showed any bravado @ all, by rescuing a much-abused & starved doggie & also later on standing up to the hard-arse bullying housekeeper, in defense of the poor maid who accidentally broke a family vase. The ending fizzled, no thrills. For a hero who’s supposedly worked as a contact for the British War Office, Adrian was not v. astute. 16 pages towards the end, he still couldn’t tell for sure which twin he married - when both gals stood next to each other @ an outdoor picnic – which devastated his already-insecure wife even more & stretched the conflict / Violet’s ‘poor me’ mentality to its breaking point. Uncanny resemblance in looks, hairdos & wardrobe aside, a part of me wished my hero would have a keener sense in telling them apart. After all, he’s been sleeping w/ 1 of ‘em & H/H have cleared up the air ‘bout the twins’ switching debacle. The last 1/3 of the book, Adrian was ghastly to his younger bro’ & baffled wife. I gotta say that none of the 2ndary characters (Kit, Jeannette, Eliza) were appealing enough for me to seek out the rest of the trilogy. I like unrequited luv theme (in this case, Violet’s been in luv w/ Adrian long before their MOC) & introverted, bespectacled heroines, but this was not quite a DIK =^2
the fact that jt leroy didn't actually exist made this book better than it was...if only because someone would have to be fairly depraved & self-aggrandizing to write this, not to mention to believe it's a memoir. *skin crawls*
