This was the third time I started this book and this time I finally made it through. I don't know why I couldn't finish it before as I very much enjoyed it. This book was supposed to be the first in a series of three and many of the characters introduced seem to be just waiting to be re-introduced. They overlap often in the first third of the book but the remainder focuses on a few of their stories. The thing that I was most surprised at was Nemrovsky's understanding view towards the Germans and disgust at many of the French. She seemed to be more upset by the behavior of her adopted countrymen than those who ended up killing her at Auschwitz.
Plot was a little weak with this one. Still enjoy the characters, though.
Overwhelming.
