Well of course two stars is an unfair rating for this book; I gave "The DaVinci Code" four, for goodness' sake! But the Goodreads star-rating system seems meant to reflect personal enjoyment, rather than issues like whether a book is beautifully written, poignant and a modern classic, which of course The Sportswriter is generally held to be. But I started this book in February of 2011 and it took me over a year to finish it. I found it very hard to get a handhold on the character of Frank Bascombe—he kept slipping away from me. A relatively successful sportswriter (obv.), the book follows Bascombe on an Easter weekend. He mourns the anniversary of his eldest child's death, goes away with his girlfriend, talks with a troubled friend (a fellow member of the divorced men's club) and many other things besides. He seems to want to live in the moment, to see the best in people, to be an optimist, to be happy—only to me it felt like he was trying to keep all personal connections at arm's length, not to be tied down to anything. I just couldn't get in his head; I found it hard to connect with him. I also struggled with the book overall, often nodding off after a few pages. I think I'm clearer on why, after seeing Richard Ford speak in person. He himself is dyslexic, and mentioned that he spends a long time poring over a sentence—and thus tends to read books that reward time spent on a single sentence. I suspect I often only really acknowledge the shape of a sentence as I read—I read too fast for Richard Ford. I have a feeling it's to my loss. Once I consciously slowed down I felt more rewarded. Though, that could also be because more concrete things "happen" towards the end of the book, so it's easier to get a grip on what everyone is feeling. I have a friend who loves the Sportswriter trilogy (and Richard Ford in general). The event I went to, at which he spoke, appeared sold out (or very nearly so). He has legions of fans. Also he appears to be a completely charming & intelligent man and if he wanted to start a cult I would totally join. So give it a go yourself, don't rely on this review of mine—I suspect I'm not ready for Richard Ford.
