This book was in my Christmas stocking, and is not necessarily something I would have picked out for myself. It is about two teenagers sent to a mountain village to be "re-educated" through labor. It is a lovely novel detailing their friendship, relationship with a tailor's daughter, and some banned Western novels. I cannot imagine living in a village such as the ones detailed in the story, and knowing that things like this happened brought tears to my eyes at times. The book also has humor and a little love story peppered throughout, which is a nice touch.

This is one of Nicholas Sparks' recent work and I am surprise not to much difference in his writing. This story reminds about The Guardian, which is also about stalkers. I really loved the ending though. It was surprising to find out that one of the characters in the story isn't real. I had to put down the book for a minute and think everything through to understand what was going on! Although the ending was great, I am slightly disappointed to see repeating themes again.
