I'd give five stars to each of Chabon's books that I've read: "Mysteries of Pittsburgh," "Wonder Boys," and this one. My own personal affinity for stories with very loose plots, centering around somewhat self-destructive characters who bounce between apartments, university, coffee shops, and sexual relationships leads me to enjoy the other two books just slightly more than "Kavalier and Clay," though they're all on the same level. I had no idea how "epic" this story would be, figuring it was about two comic book artists and how they got going in their business. I'm glad I was wrong; there's so much that happens in this story, involving World War II, the birth of the comic book business, censorship...along with a compelling story about friendship. I highly recommend this book.
