nice written story of my favorite author..In My Father's Court
Booker T. Washington was born a slave around the year 1858-59. Slaves were set free in 1867 when Abraham Lincoln delivered his Emancipation Proclamation address. Booker then moved to West Virginia with his mother and two brothers and sister, they met up with his father. He worked as a salt grinder, worked in the mines and then as a laborer for a white lady. His goal was to get an education, he saved up to go to Hampton, working days while going to school at night. He then went back to Malden, West Virginia and became a teacher while supporting his two brothers to go to Hampton. After two years as a teacher in West Virginia, he received a letter asking him to become principal and leader of a new school in Alabama called Tuskegee. He became a great orator, educational leader and spokesman for his race. He received many honors, received a degree from Harvard, one of the oldest institutions in America and met with many of the presidents. His way of educating the blacks was different but it worked, he used both trades and book learning to teach the blacks in order for them to make their way into society. He is an inspiration and light to many, he worked hard for his race not expecting anything in return but for his people to be happy and self reliant.
