This "acclaimed" novel of 600 interminable pages could have, in the hands of a more skilled editor, been a cracking good 350-page yarn. I was unsympathetic to the philandering husband (wasn't four wives already enough?) and to the four wives who each put up with his neglect and lack of responsibility. But the damage doesn't end there: their 26 (27?) children bear the brunt of it. Not recommended. I feel like I wasted those hours.
