This is the follow up of Pretties, in Scott Westerfeld’s Ugly series and it is a remarkable ending to a remarkable series. In Specials Tally is now a special and has to pick one side once and for all and end the war she began. It brings everything back in a full circle. It’s full of action and adventure and a little bit of romance, but mostly it is about a normal girl who is conflicted with what she should do to be normal in society and what she knows she has to do. I love it because what Tally goes through internally is what people are faced with everyday. Society often expects one thing of us, but there is often something in us that feels there is another better choice. It’s that choice of fighting for your right to choose and be accountable for you that Tally fights for. As her government keeps trying to take away her right to choose, she is able to break through and beat their system. She is special because she stands up even if she stands alone, because she believes is something bigger than herself and all of them. It’s a great book for anyone because it makes us think about what we would do in the situations Tally is in, would we fight or would we comply?
