Great read, several nice twists, and I'm giving it four stars even though I figured everything out early on. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
At first made me fear being a pastors wife. But it's a good story and brings up good stuff.
It is always interesting when an author takes an obscure historical figure and creates a fictional narrative. The author assumes character traits and motives based on historical perspective and while it is so easy for me as a reader to fall into the trap of accepting the story as likely or even accurate, I try to keep myself from falling into that trap. This was a good story and I was glad to learn about everyday life for women in Old Testament Canaan and Egypt. Life was very difficult for women and Dinah was dealt a mean hand. If her life turned out as interesting as this story made it then she was luckier than most women of that time.
I love Jeanette Winterson's fiction, but I have a hopeless passion for this non-fiction book about the place of art in the world and in our society, the function of artists, and what makes art great. As I read it, I marked passage after passage as memorable, beautifully written, and true. This book placed Winterson in my own personal pantheon of Inspirational Saints of Writing.
