"Slaughterhouse-Five" is one of the best examples of playfulness within a particular genre that I've seen. What I mean by this is that, while it is essentially a time-traveling piece of science-fiction, it is more importantly a very funny and effective rumination on much more serious topics such as the horrors of World War II. Vonnegut uses escapism not just as a piece of entertainment but as an example of how we can sometimes deal with difficult subject matter, and that is very important to me both as a reader and a writer.
This book brings back so many memories of High School I don't even know where to begin. Atticus!!!!
An important book--but the content is extremely disturbing. Not for the slightly squeamish.
