Great historical fiction book. Switches back and forth between present day and 1942 Paris during the Velodrome d'hiver roundup of Jews before they were sent to Auschwitz.
This is a great book written by a newspaper columnist. So its written in a very enjoyable easy to read style. If you ever had a dog, this book will make you laugh, cry, and love your dog that much more. Okay, I didn't really cry, but I had to hold back a tear.
Absolutely heartbreaking. The story of Scheeres and her adopted black brother will make your heart ache. The horrific racism exhibited towards David (as well as Julia), is quite shocking. And the behavior of their parents is unbelievable as well. I think this one will stay with me for a long time. I cried over and over again, not so much for Julia, but for David. His continued optimism and belief in family no matter what was thrown at him makes everything he endured even worse.
I loved both the story and the characters, but way too much sex. Easily more sex scenes than five sentence conversations between the MC's. I would give it 3.5 stars maybe. Love the cover though and the Russian is wicked good, the cop a bit naive but hey, they worked together.
I like the book more than the first.
