This book is good for the imagination. I read this book long ago and loved it then and am now rereading it, as well as the other Chronicles of Narnia, and I still enjoy it.
This guy (best known perhaps for writing A Peoples History of the United States) has a really incredible story, and this is his autobiography. The part that stands out the most in my memory is his accounts of his work in the civil rights movement. It's one of those books that helps bring perspective on the political movements of last century, and how the stuff we're talking about today fits in.
The Pledge is a great addition to the dystopian genre. I am completely BLOWN away…I’ve read Derting’s previous series “The Body Finder” so I knew Kim’s writing would be awesome! Let’s not forget an awesome heroine, and her ability to squeeze in a love story. The thing I like about Derting’s characters is that you ALWAYS in the loop. You’re with the characters every step of the way with their emotions, tough decisions, etc. With Charlaina “Charlie” you can definitely feel the conflict she has going on within herself. I mean she’s a smart girl, there’s so many things that she handles so well that even I would have been confused with. That being said, I have to bring up Charlie’s best friend Brooklyn, we find out something huge about her, that really changes everything. I feel like the connection I’ve made with her was kind of tarnished because one minute she’s this normal girl and the next she a totally different person. Well Charlie still trusts her, I feel like I have to get to know this new rebel kick-butt Brooklyn. Now on to the hotness that is Max, oh my gosh I love him…One of my favorite passages from him: "I pledge to keep you safe.” He is one of the awesome guys in YA, for one he’s honest, two sensitive, three he’ll do anything to protect those he cares about (did I mention he has a brother?)...I don’t think I’ve ever read anyone like him. That’s what I love about Derting, she is one of those authors who keeps YA fresh! EVERYONE should read The Pledge, it’s a different dystopian! There’s a love story, fantasy elements, great characters and plot.
