There were some wonderful sentences in this book. I cannot quite quote ny of them, but some were brillant. It's your usual murder mystery with a "threaded throughout" twist, but a good and quick read.

An evil, abusive father, mistreatment of black people . . . it ought to have been an Oprah Book Club selection. I don’t know how she overlooked this one. Actually, it’s a good story, but it could have been so much better without the heavy-handed racial pandering. The Boatwright sisters are educated, cultured, ambitious, and black. (Let’s not forget Lily’s young black boyfriend, Zach, who wants to be a lawyer.) Then, there are the white people: Lily’s evil, abusive father, the rednecks in town who love beating up black people, and the sheriff who’s always willing to look the other way. Heck, there are a ton of white people who oppress blacks and keep them down. During the story, Lily keeps whining that skin color shouldn’t matter, but if you only read this book and others like it, you would have to conclude that skin color determines everything. Do you want to be sensitive, cultured and well-educated? You’ve gotta be black. Are you white? Sorry, you cruel, insensitive, abusive slobs. Do you want a warm, nurturing environment? Go live with black women. Your wounds will be healed and life’s greatest questions will be answered for you. Don’t get me wrong, I liked this book, but without the race-preaching, it could have been so much better!
