Not much information about stock picking, but a very useful book about challenging common assumptions and thinking about stocks from a top-down approach. Probably one of the best investment books I've ever read.
I have to say that I wasn't that impressed with this book. I found parts of it confusing- it seemed to jump forwards and backwards in its history. I was expecting more story telling which incorporated history. It started with more history and gradually transitioned to more of a story. My opinions of the different characters varied back and forth. I felt pity and sympathy alternating for the king who suffered under the manipulation of first Struensee and then under Guldberg (this you can tell from the way the end of his life is described, even if it wasn't depicted in the book). As for his Queen Caroline, I felt the same sympathy and could not imagine being born, especially as a woman, into a royal family during these centuries as you just became a pawn for your family to marry off to different royal families. The rampant interbreeding of families was also a major problem with the birth and mental defects that they faced. However, I did think that she was reckless and a bit forward for a woman at the time. I found Struensee to be despicable, absolutely taking advantage of a weak king but I did think that he went to his death very bravely. As always, the children suffer the most!
A friend gave me this to read because she loved it. Although the author is brilliant with his words and very descriptive of places and events, I have a hard time getting to like the characters. They just seem, well, cold and distant as adults. Maybe that's the point because I know something traumatizing happened in their childhood -which I'm waiting to find out what it was -but I'm halfway through the book now (2nd attempt at reading it) and am still not engrossed.
Dus ach.
