The first Buddhist book I ever read.

I was torn about how to rate this book. My rating is soley based on the fact that for me it was a book that I could put down and fishish whenever (I certainly didn't stay up till 3am....which I have been know to do on occasion). I would have rated this 3 1/2 stars if I could. It was a good book. I must say that my eyes watered up in a few places and I love the spiritual aspect of the book even though they don't fall exactly in line with my personal beleifs....I can see why this is such a popular book because not everyone probably gets alot of spiritual input in there lives...and you can't help but get the warm fuzzy feelings from it....how can you not like something that promotes God, forgiveness and overall being a good person.....favorite quote from a chapter heading: Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. -Author Unknown

Though this book is set in a high school, the young writers in this book reminded me of writers of all ages (student writers, published and unpublished writers, old writers, new writers, etc.) who are obsessed both with consuming words and producing them. In this way, Wolff does a wonderful job of speaking to writers across the board, touching on the issues that make us most crazy and most fulfilled. A great riff on the writing life.

I couldn't not read this book after having met the author, editor and publicist. All the buzz was true - Sittenfeld is an expert on Northeast boarding school culture. Unfortunately Prep brings nothing new to the table and her protagonist's 4-year saga as the non-elite outsider is depressing and defeating. Great jacket cover, though!
