I seriously didn't get this book. I couldn't stand the supposed protagonist. She was so whiny and overly analytic. I wish the book had been total fluff and full of boarding-school scandals and gossip. I could have taken it at face value that way.
I give myself a 50 page limit for books to decide whether or not to continue reading them. I should have listened to my gut feeling and quit then. The author had way more knowledge about what was going on and didn't apparently feel like sharing that with the reader which made for a confusing if strangely detailed story. Also, no one dies. They come to the brink at least 3 times each and are brought back with elaborate healing descriptions including knitting of tissue and the re-distribution of blood. These graphic details didn't add to my suspension of disbelief, but made me more skeptical about the whole process. This is also apparently the set-up for a sequel that never materialized, so you don't even get the finish the story. However, there is a large appendix section at the back where you can learn more about the land and peoples of this world that the author gives us no reason to care about.
