I love Jeanette Winterson, even though I always spell her first name wrong - she writes beautiful, ambiguous stories with perfect language. This story is set in the Napoleonic Wars, and its main characters are Napoleon's cook and a Venetian gondolier with webbed feet. Winterson's stories are unexpected, and she makes me feel completely hopeless as a writer, because she is so skilled.
