There's something quiet and unpretentious about the writing. The subject hits home, as I went to a prep school also, but reading about Holden somehow frees me of some of the illusory baggage given to such school and coming-of-age situations by those who witness them from afar, the kind of baggage that we accrue without really earning it ourselves. I feel lighter after reading this book.
I bought it to take on vacation, but never really finished it...but I would like to one day!
I didn't care much for the story of Bird Buddha, who strikes me as an annoyingly precocious "special snowflake" type. But the grainy black-and-white photos of seagulls tickled me, and I sort of love that it's (inexplicably) a global bestseller.
