This is the first book by Bradley I ever read. She wrote it with her brother, and I remember doubting whether her work would be as good when writing alone. Though the story is presented as a simple story from the perspective of the prey in a hunt of sapient beings, I was most impressed by the discussions of extraterrestrial sapientology and variances. I did later realize that Bradley tended to regard the way Earth zoology worked out as universal (Stephen Hay Gould's point that even vertebrates didn't have much of an edge in early biotic communities, and their predominance was far from assured is not even contemplated, for example). Why WOULD the same families (canidae, felidae, primates, etc) originate on world after world? My later discovery of other writers who had a more realistic view (though still not entirely universal or consistent with the fossil evidence) relegated this book to the background--but as an introduction, I found it useful.
